Lance Armstrong's Year Has Sucked

Once hailed as a hero, former cyclist Lance Armstrong’s reputation has shifted a bit in the public eye. Armstrong, now retired, is set to lose his record seven Tour de France titles after the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) published a report saying that he organized an elaborate doping scheme on his way to the top of the cycling world.

Now, Armstrong is stepping down as chairman of the Livestrong Foundation – a cancer support charity that he founded. “To spare the foundation any negative effects as a result of controversy surrounding my cycling career, I will conclude my chairmainship,” Armstrong said in a statement this week.

Coinciding with his resignation from the charity he founded, sports giant Nike also announced that, while they still will back the charity, they can no longer sponsor the man behind it.

“Due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade, it is with great sadness that we have terminated our contract with him,” the company said. ESPN is also reporting that Trek Bicycles, energy drink maker FRS, and beer manufacturer Anheuser-Bush are also ending their relationships with Armstrong.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) received the USADA report last week and says that it could respond “at any time” to allegations that Armstrong was a serial drug cheat. UCI spokesman Enrico Carpani told the Associated Press that their decision could happen “as early as Friday.”
